What types of gas flow meters are there

A gas flowmeter is an instrument used to measure the flow of gas. Its working principle is based on fluid dynamics, acoustics or mechanical principles, and it determines the flow rate of gas by detecting its flow characteristics in the pipeline. The flowmeters used for measuring gas can be classified into differential pressure flowmeters, turbine flowmeters, vortex flowmeters and mass flowmeters based on different measurement principles. Today, we mainly discuss the key points of using these commonly used gas flowmeters

Differential pressure flowmeter

A differential pressure flowmeter measures flow by utilizing the pressure difference generated when a fluid passes through a throttling device. Common differential pressure flowmeters include orifice plate flowmeters, nozzle flowmeters and Venturi flowmeters, etc. This flowmeter has a simple and sturdy structure, stable and reliable performance, and is suitable for measuring various fluids. However, the measurement accuracy is relatively low, and it requires a long straight pipe section, as well as certain requirements for installation conditions.

2. Gas turbine flowmeter

The gas turbine flowmeter is based on the principle of turbine rotation. When the fluid passes through the turbine flowmeter sensor, the turbine rotates due to the fluid’s impact force. The rotational speed of the turbine is linearly related to the fluid flow rate. By measuring the rotational speed of the turbine, the fluid flow rate can be determined. This flowmeter features high measurement accuracy, good repeatability and wide measurement range.

4. Vortex flowmeter

The vortex flowmeter operates based on the principle of the Kelvel-Helmholtz vortex. It determines the flow rate by installing a vortex generator in the fluid pipeline and measuring the frequency of the vortex signal. Vortex flowmeters have the advantages of high measurement accuracy, good stability, low pressure loss and fast response speed, but they are relatively sensitive to impurities and vibrations in the fluid.

5. Thermal gas mass flowmeter

The thermal gas mass flowmeter is an instrument that directly measures the mass flow rate of fluids. It determines the flow rate by measuring the mass and time of the fluid in the pipeline. Mass flowmeters have the advantages of high measurement accuracy and being unaffected by fluid density and temperature, but they are relatively expensive and have certain requirements for installation conditions.

Application fields: Gas flowmeters are widely used in urban gas, industrial gas, boiler combustion control and other fields. They can measure the flow of gas, providing accurate data support for energy management, production control and metered charging, etc.
